November is Feline Diabetes Awareness Month, and I can honestly say, before writing this, I didn't know much about the very treatable, manageable disease that often affects older, overweight cats. Like in human diabetes, feline diabetes happens when there's not enough insulin in the body to balance out the glucose in the diet.

It's important to know the symptoms of feline diabetes, and consult with your veterinarian if you're seeing those signs. The main signals from your cat will be increased thirst and more frequent urination. Some cats also display increased appetite, weight loss, listlessness sometimes even vomiting or diarrhea. Your veterinarian will run some tests to determine the cause of the symptoms.

Although feline diabetes sounds scary, it can actually be reversed with dietary changes -- not all cats will need to receive insulin injections to regulate glucose levels. It's important for a diabetic cat (as well as all cats) to receive a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. You absolutely can't free-feed a cat with feline diabetes.

Knowing the signs of feline diabetes, immediately consulting with your veterinarian and making dietary changes could mean a lifetime of remission, and more precious years with your happy, healthy cat!
