A daydream is a meal at which images are eaten. Some of us are gourmets, some gourmands, and a good many take their images precooked out of a can and swallow them down whole, absent-mindedly and with little relish.
~W.H. Auden
I'm a daydreamer. My family will vouch for my frequent flyer card to La-La Land and how many miles I've amassed. Sometimes in mid-chat, my conversation-cohort realizes that I've already checked out and turned my keys in at the front desk. I'm not proud of this habit and when I realize I'm doing it, redirect my presence to the current situation. This natural flair for flights of fantasy does actually come in handy when my kids are squabbling in the backseat of the van. John sometimes glares at me in disbelief and asks, "Are you hearing this??" Ummm...nope. Why would I want to pay attention to the steady squawking of "Her foot is touching mine" and "He's trying to to read over my shoulder." It's a marvelous defense mechanism. Maybe my natural ability to ignore means I'm slowly turning into a cat...
LOL...maybe so Angie!! I do the same daydream trick and, like you, have been known to tune out in mid-conversation! I like to think it's because we're creative. :) In fact, I refuse to call it "daydreaming" anymore. I have officially renamed it "Being Lost in Thought". It's one of my very favorite frugal luxuries!

ReplyDeleteYep, we simply have too much in common.
ReplyDeleteThis is one reason I don't like talking on the phone. I often just "wander off" and loose all track of the conversation. I even do that while reading a book sometimes (especially if it's a boring book). I'll still be reading, or at least my eyes will be following the lines on the page, but I will be thinking of something else entirely.
But, that's OK. I think all really nice, really creative people are daydreamers. That's my story anyway.
(Sorry about the previous deletion. I was signed in under the wrong account. Must have been daydreaming.) :-)
I'm glad I'm not the only one! Thank you for your comments, Tracey and Susan :)
